Dr. Lucille Teasdale-Corti
Dr. Lucille Teasdale-Corti (1929-1996). Dr. Lucille Teasdale graduated from the University of Montreal in 1955. Trained in paediatric surgery, she married Italian paediatrician, Dr. Piero Corti, in a small missionary hospital in northern Uganda in 1961. They dedicated their lives to Lacor Hospital to provide "The best possible care, to the greatest number of people, at the least possible cost," turning it into the largest non-profit hospital and a major health training institution in the region. Despite the decades of civil conflict, poverty and disease outbreaks, they accomplished their goals. Dr. Teasdale-Corti contracted AIDS while operating on war casualties. In 1990, Dr. Teasdale-Corti received the Order of Canada in 1990.
Dr. Teasdale-Corti died on August 1, 1996 and is buried in the hospital courtyard along with her husband Piero, who died in 2003. The hospital continues to be the referral hospital in northern Uganda, treating up to 300,000 patients a year and training 500 resident students in the hospital's health training schools. The couple's daughter, Dr. Dominique Corti, continues their mission through the Teasdale-Corti Foundation they created to support Lacor Hospital.
